The Whyalla Water Reclamation Project will extract approximately 3 ML/d of wastewater from the existing sewerage network, and treat it to Class B effluent standard. Most of this water will be re-used for irrigation of approximately 35 ha for Whyalla Golf Course and Whyalla City Council.
PB provided a comprehensive multidisciplinary service to SA Water on this project.
The main drivers for the scheme were SA Water’s Environmental Improvement Plan and strong community support for a reuse scheme. Environmental benefits of the scheme include:
-
a dramatic reduction in the volume of effluent discharged to a mangrove and marine environment, with a period of no discharge into Spencer Gulf of 3–5 months per year
-
dramatic reduction of nitrogen and phosphorous loads to the head of Spencer Gulf
- reduced demand for water from the Murray River.
