Woomargama Bypass

Woomargama Bypass

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is managing planning and construction of a dual carriageway bypass of the village of Woomargama to improve safety and transport efficiency.

Background

The Australian and New South Wales governments are committed to upgrading the entire length of the Hume Highway to a four lane divided carriageway by 2012.

Under the Nation Building Program, the Australian Government has allocated $265 million for construction of the Woomargama bypass.

An option to the west of Woomargama has been confirmed as the preferred route and construction is expected to commence in early 2010.

Why is a bypass needed?

A bypass will improve safety and convenience for motorists and local residents by removing many light and heavy vehicles from the current route through the village. The bypass will also improve the efficiency of freight movements along the Hume Highway, the main transport corridor between Sydney and Melbourne.

Benefits of a Woomargama Bypass

  • Removal of most heavy vehicle movements from the village.
  • Improved pedestrian safety along the current Hume Highway route in the village.
  • Travel time and fuel savings for vehicles moving between Sydney and Melbourne.
  • Local traffic separated from Hume Highway through traffic.
  • Improved road safety.
